What is your personal vision for the craft malt community?
I envision a future where craft malt is widely available and known for its creativity, quality, and sense of place. I envision a future where craft maltsters are successful in business, responsive to goals of sustainability, and representative of their diverse communities. I envision a craft malt community that continues to be defined by comradery.
Why are you interested in serving on the Guild’s Board of Directors (BOD)?
As an educator, I am interested in contributing in any way I can to ensure the healthy and sustained growth of the industry. During the process of establishing our campus malting operations, I have benefited from the guild and I am willing to support the guild as I am able.
What skills, resources, and connections do you feel you will be able to contribute to the Guild’s Board?
I feel my experience as a university professor and administrator provides me with a useful skill set that allows me to assist not-for-profit organizations in achieving their objectives with available resources. As founding director of the Southern Illinois University Fermentation Science Institute, I feel I have a unique perspective as a generalist in the brewing, distilling, and fermentation industries.
What other long-term volunteer opportunities have you been involved in, including service on other Boards? Please list and describe:
I am a member of the American Society of Brewing Chemists, the Illinois Craft Brewers Guild, the BA, and the MBAA. I have served on the Web Committee of the MBAA, which organizes and provides their webinar series. I also served two 3-year terms on the board of the Carbondale New School, which is a not-for-profit parent-owned cooperative school for grades K-8. During that time, I led and authored a comprehensive strategic plan.
What do you hope to get out of service on the Guild’s BOD?
I hope to further strengthen my understanding of and connections within the maltster community so I may better serve the industry through our educational programs.
What is one thing that your fellow Guild members should know about you?
I’m equally enthusiastic about malt, beer, whiskey, and sailing.
