Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre

The Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre (CMBTC) is an independent, not-for-profit research facility established in 2000 that serves the Canadian malting barley value chain providing technical support and market information to stakeholders including breeders, producers, seed companies, processors, exporters, maltsters, and brewers.

State-of-the-Art pilot malting and brewing facilities, staffed with specialists, are used to evaluate the quality of Canadian malting barley in the malting and brewing processes, simulating commercial-scale production.

The CMBTC delivers solutions to the malting barley, malt and brewing industries through a variety of activities including quality evaluation of new Canadian malting barley varieties, annual new crop quality assessment, export cargo analysis, troubleshooting, and technical support for members as well as market development initiatives.

Montana State University Barley, Malt, and Brewing Quality Lab

The Montana State University Barley, Malt & Brewing Quality Lab is a testing and educational resource for the full barley value chain and engages via three pillars: research, education, and outreach.

Outreach:

Our full-service lab provides data for a spectrum of regional to international clients including family farms, maltsters, research institutions, brewers, and distillers. We partner closely with these groups to ensure the data we provide is timely, accurate, and enables good decisions. Outreach, however, is a mission beyond just analytical. Consumers have become disconnected from farmers and the barley value chain. We are dedicated to bringing knowledge and connections forward via speaking engagements, facility tours, providing educational classes, curating an ever-expanding educational website, and being actively involved with social media.

Research:

As a component of the MSU Barley Breeding Program, the state-of-the-art lab supports the breeding process via a full range of barley testing, in-house malting, malt quality analysis, and brewing research. The innovative lab was established in 2016 to offer more malt data points earlier in the selection process, allowing the release of the highest quality barley varieties. Outside of breeding the program also explores research areas such as the environmental and genetic factors that impact malt quality, and the influence of variety and process on flavor, including their interaction with kilning methods on beer flavor.

Education:

We are committed to education and support undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students in their pursuit of expanded knowledge in the areas of barley, malt, and brewing. Example research projects include the genetic control over the speed of grain hydration in malting, heirloom flavor characterization, barley root structure, and mechanisms of acidic soil tolerance.
